Blog appearance, design, and structure tips 1

Posted on August 26, 2011 by Guillermo Bautista

Aside from the content of your blog, the two other things that you should consider are its appearance and ‘structure.’ These things represent you — these are the what readers see first. If you own a restaurant, for example, to attract customers you would probably make the front of your building as clean as possible; you probably would put some streamers with a catchy tag line; or you would probably display large tarpaulins or posters of our best menus.

This is similar to blogs. To attract readers, in your posts, you would probably want to add a very intriguing photos, or think of titles that are puzzling, thought provoking, or controversial. You do not want your blog to be cluttered and disorganized. You would want  the appearance of your blog simple, easy to read, and elegant. The list below are some of the most practical tips on how to improve the design and appearance of your blog.

Blog Design and Appearance Tips

  • First impression lasts.  That is why you should also be conscious of how your blog looks. You should make your blog attractive or simple. The design, theme, and color of your blog should be appropriate to your topic. If you blog about flowers, you may want to choose light colors over dark ones.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words. This is one way of saying that an all-text blog is boring.  With all the blogging tools nowadays, there is no reason for you not to insert photos or diagrams in your posts.  In addition, you can also vary your media from time to time:  audio files, videos, applets, animations, etc.
  • Be organized. If I were to rewrite Math and Multimedia, one of the things that I will reorganize are my categories.  It should not have been as tall as the Empire State building. Your widgets should also be organized. Widgets are better grouped by relevance; for example, the email subscriptions box and RSS feeds buttons should be next to each other,  recent posts widgets and calendar of posts widget should also go together, etc.
  • Do not use offensive colors. Avoid using bright red, or neon green, or other similar colors. Who would want to read a blog that hurts the eyes?
  • Do not use a very small font size. Although text size can be increased on almost all browsers, we strongly advise that you use texts that are not very small.  Only a few people know how to increase the text size in their browsers, and some who even know won’t bother changing them. They would just leave.
That’s it for now. In the next post, we are going to give you tips on how to structure your blog.
